I was trying to upgrade at the exact same time the host upgraded MySQL and it busted my passwords. Upgrading would have kept all my templates and settings - it's nearly as easy as installing, really. And nice to hear comments are back. :) I like the preventive measures in the upgrade, so won't be resorting to plugins that break things again.
